You would think that the executive who consumes, on average, 50% of the capital invested by businesses would have a lot of power. You would be wrong. CIOs are basically powerless and they know it. Smart CIOs lead from the back by creating partnerships and alliances and create powerful roles for themselves, their organizations and technology. They spend most of their time outside their departments with the business and focus on understanding others, balancing advocacy and inquiry, persuading and inspiring others. Leading from the back is leadership at its finest because it fosters commitment, not compliance, without promise of rewards beyond work well done.
